Not every beep is a wood stud you should trust with a 65 inch TV. In Boston condos and older homes you will hit metal studs, pipes, electrical, and fire blocking. Each needs a different mount strategy. A cheap stud finder is a clue, not a structural report.
What the beeps usually mean
Edge finders chirp at the edges of dense material. Center finders try to mark the middle. Both can false-positive on screws, tape, plaster ridges, and metal corner bead. Always scan a horizontal span and mark both edges before you believe a center.
Studs are often 16 inches on center, but renovations ignore that rule. Measure what you mark. If spacing jumps from 16 to 24, you may be on blocking, not a continuous stud line.
Wood vs metal studs
Wood takes lag screws sized for the mount and TV weight. Metal studs need hardware rated for that system. Treating metal like wood is a common DIY failure. If your finder cannot tell wood from metal, stop and use a better tool or hire the mount out.
Fire blocks and pipes
A solid band between studs may be fire blocking, not a stud you can hang from the same way. Plumbing and electrical also create density. If a mark sits directly above a known bath stack or panel, assume risk until proven otherwise.
Knock test and second opinions
- Knock: hollow between studs, duller on solid framing
- Scan a 24 inch horizontal span and map a pattern
- Recheck with a second tool or a small inspection method when weight is high
- When in doubt, book a pro. Drywall repair and a fallen TV cost more than a mount visit
